Your homework 1 for Week 10 is to "review" the video clips we watched on Monday and read the recently released report by the non-profit organization Common Core, "Still At Risk: What Students Don't Know Even Now" by Frederick M. Hess. (Links to the videoclips are on the home page of the EdAd 571 MyClass space under "Links" on the bottom right hand side.)
Then I'd like you to then visit the Core Knowledge Blog at http://www.coreknowledge.org/blog/2008/02/28/content-with-not-knowing/ I'd like you to blog your response to the issue described in the Content With Not Knowing post. In order for people who visit the Core Knowledge blog to see your posts, you'll need to "track back" which lets the Core Knowledge blog know that you have made a comment about their post in another blog (for the sake of simplicity, copy this trackback url and paste it into your post: http://www.coreknowledge.org/blog/2008/02/28/content-with-not-knowing/trackback/)
By having our own blog, we can ensure that your posts will be kept in a safe repository; the other reason is related to "social capital" - it's a way to make sure you are "cited" and not the person you are commenting about.
Your core discussion this week, then, will consist of writing world-viewable blog posts which contribute to the national dialog exploring issues in education. As of today (3/13), there is one response posted. You'll notice that in the blog there are links to The New York Times' and CBS's coverage of the Still At Risk report.
Your job in the responses you post is to integrate concepts, data and evidence from readings and discussion in this class as well as other sources to support your position and/or raise and explore relevant questions. I encourage you to use the CITR to guide your analysis and organization. Your post (one response ) is due by Thursday night 3/20. Your follow up post to either a classmate or someone else in the world who responds is due by Sunday evening 3/23.
